From July 8 to 12 I was in Marburg for the international Showdown tournament “Showdown together with Friends”. About 40 players from Germany and abroad, five days of competition. I finished 21st with five wins in nine matches.
On the first day I had to find my way into the tournament. I won my first group match against Vito-mikele Lasorsa convincingly (2:0), but lost the remaining three against Arnaud Savio, Horst Griffaton and Thade Rosenfeldt. I had to get used to the level of play again – the balls come faster and more precisely than what I’m used to from training. Fourth out of five in the group.
After the first group phase came the second, and things went much better. I beat Jaroslaw Semczyszyn convincingly (2:0) and narrowly lost to Konsta Kuorikoski (1:2) – the third set went 7:12, there was more in it. The most important win was against Andre Rauser, 2:0 (11:9, 13:11). Andre is one of the favourites in Division C South of the Showdown Germany League, and the second set was a tight affair at 13:11.
On the last day I won both placement matches: against David Erkinger (2:0) and in the match for 21st place against Anis Benmansour (2:1, with 11:2 in the deciding set).
Overall I’m quite happy with the result. If I can find more opportunities to play against strong opponents before a tournament like this, things could go better from the start.
