  • Vienna ParaAthletics Championship 2025 – Finally less than 70!

After my slow start at the German ParaAthletic Championship the week before I wanted to run quick from the start. The temperature was similar. Around 34 degrees celsius. Very hot! This time the warmup was not rushed in any way and my trainer Carlos made a stride training the Tuesday before: start with quick and fast sprint strides to top speed and then switch to long speed preserving strides until the end. The was one other person in my race, which was way slower. So I basicly ran alone with Simon this time. No fast peiple running away from me this time.

The start was good this time and I kept the speed pretty well. 3-4 strides after the finish I fell… But the time was finally below 70: 68.23 seconds. Finally I managed a good 400m race as intended!

  • German ParaAthletic Champhionship 2025

On 14th of June I attendend the German ParaAthletic Championship 2025 in Leichlingen. I ran 400m again with Simon as my Guide. The day was very hot. Our preparation was a bit hurried, because I mixed up some times. But nonetheless we did a good warmup and went to the start. From the get go I held back a bit, because eof the 34 degress celsius. I just should’ve given it all. I did the bigger steps right from the start instaed of accelarating with smaller steps to top speed first. So in the end i got a new PB with 70.23, but my trainer and guide agreed I left some seconds on the track. Hope to do better next week in Vienna!

Here is a video with the start and finish of the race:

  • 400m at Ludwig Jall Sportfest

On May 17th I attended the Ludwig Jall Sportfest in the Dante Stadium in Munich. After the fall the week before in Regensburg (Read more) my goal for this reace was to not overpace in the beginning and use long strides for the race. This time I ran with Edi. He is one of my regular guides for track training outside. We had a good warm up and made some speed progression runs to the target pace for the race. This always helps me to note overpace. It also did this time. The start was a bit delayed. 4 times we heard “on your marks”, because there was a technical issue with the loud speaker.

But then it was resolved and we were off. We really hit the target pace well and powered through the whole 400m and finished in 70.6 seconds. A new personal best for me. At the medial ceremony we both got a gold medal. It really was a great race and I’m looking forward to the German para athletics champhionship in the middle of June!

I made a video of the race with my Meta Glasses and videos from my family:

  • 400m at the Rolf Watter Sportfest in Regensburg

400m at the Rolf Watter Sportfest in Regensburg

On May 17th, I attended the Rolf Watter Sportfest in Regensburg with my guide, Simon. The race started quite late, at 18:30, but I was determined to run under 70 seconds. My start felt strong, and I was ready to give it my all. Unfortunately, I went out too fast and overpaced myself. My stride was too short and my frequency too high, which quickly caught up with me.

After 300 meters, I started to feel the lactate building up in my legs. By 350 meters, I began to stumble and ended up falling. 🙈 Nevertheless, I got back up and finished the race in 80.03 seconds—more than 10 seconds over my goal, and with scraped knees to show for it.

My next competition is in one week. I’ll focus on taking longer strides and pacing myself better. Onward and upward!

And here is a video of the start and my fall at the end:

  • 400m at German ParaAthletics indoor championship

400m at German ParaAthletics indoor championship

This year the indoor German ParaAthletics championship took place in Erfurt again. But this year my trainer had another distance in mind for me. Not 3000m like las yer. Not 1500m as in the outdoor championship las year. Not 800m as in Augsburg.. I ran 400m.

My guide this year was Simon Pieper. He is a great athlete for long sprint, as 400m is called, himself. For 400m Simon really needs to mirror my legs and arms, so I’m not slowed down. Simon really did a great job with that in the training and the race!

I ran against 3 other man in a timed run. The race got of ok from lane 3. I think I could have done a better start. The first round was ok in lower 30 seconds range. After the 2nd corner we could change to lane 1 and in the 2nd we had to over take another runner, who overestimated himself. Unfortunately we lost speed, because we slowed down to his pace and accelerated after the corner again. After that it was the final corner and the finish line after 73.48 seconds. I was really happy all worked out with the starting block and the lane switch. Simon really did a great job! The time could have been better. But now I can top that in the outdoor events in the summer.

    Inclusive Max Steger Sportfest 2024

On July 28th 2024 I attended the inclusive Max Steger Sportfest with Xin. We ran the 800m. This was my first 800m run and I had a target time of 3:00. During training, that seemed reasonable after timed interval training. After warmup Xin and I did some progression runs to the target pace. This was my 4th time I trained with my new spike shoes. I have to run on the forefoot with these, which is quite challenging. After the start we hit the target pace pretty well without over pacing. between 400m to 600m I had a couple of steps, where I used my heel. This cost me a couple of seconds. On the last stretch I didn’t use my heel again and I finished in 3:00.68. Almost exactly the target time. This was a great last event for the season and I’m looking forward to some vacation!

    German ParaAthletics Championship 2024

I attended the German Para Athletics Championship in Erfurt on 15th of June 2024. This time I ran with Frank again. This time I had better preparation. The first of of the 3.75 rounds was a bit too fast again. So I slowed down a bit too much in the 3rd round. The last round was faster again with a nice final straight. I finished in 6:44, which is 15 seconds better than the Ludwig Jall Sportfest one month earlier. But I’m very happy, that I improved my time and next up will be 800m!

Ludwig Jall Sportfest on May 11th 2024

I attended the Ludig-Jall-Sportfest in Munich Germany. I did 1500m with Chloe. It was a very hot day and unfortunately I was sick two weeks and had only 1 week of training. Especially on the last run on the straight I really felt, that I had a bad cold before. But thanks to Chloe and her perfect step in my rhythm i managed to finish in 6:59:57.

Path to the German Indoor Para Athletics Championships

The German Para Indoor Championships were held in Erfurt on February 24, 2024. My name is Stefan Lohmaier, and I competed in the 3000m for the visually impaired category T12 with my guide, Frank Hitzelsberger.

I have been running with the local club Munich at Achilles International Germany since 2019. Since finishing my first marathon in September 2023 in Berlin, I have been part of the Bavarian state squad of the Bavarian Disabled Sports Association. The state coach has been training me once a week at the performance support center, and I have five additional training sessions per week. I receive great support from Achilles and always find a guide who is ready to train with me.

After the training sessions, the state coach set a target time of 14:40. Since I was unable to do a single 3000m test and had never had the chance to train indoors, I was very nervous. The track in the hall is only 200m per lap and has slightly banked curves. So, the goal was to run 15 laps at a pace faster than 1 minute per lap.

In my race, several disability classifications were combined, so there were four runner-guide pairs in my 3000m race. After the start, Frank and I positioned ourselves in 3rd place and ran the first lap a bit too fast in 42 seconds. We then slowed down a bit and managed to hit the target time of about 1 minute per lap for the next 13 laps. Frank was always able to read the current time from the board at the finish line, which was a great help. The entire Bavarian team from the BVS passionately cheered me on every lap, and Frank noticed that I always got a little faster when passing by Team Bavaria. The hardest lap was the penultimate one; I was still not sure if I could finish under 15 minutes. Finally, after the penultimate lap, the bell rang to indicate the last lap, and the clock showed 13:42. The last lap was just fun! Frank and I were able to cross the finish line in a time of 14:33.92. It was truly a great feeling!

Many thanks to all the guides who have trained with me! Achilles is awesome!
